One of the biggest challenges in becoming successful in this competitive career is starting out with the right game plan and the proper tools. In this session, we will outline a “self-starter’s” plan and “fill a toolbox” that will lend a hand in a new sales executive’s development.

Steve Fisher was named Group Publisher for Woodward Communications, Inc.’s Weekly Division in early 2009. WCI’s Weekly Division publishes paid weekly newspapers in Dyersville and Cascade, Iowa and in Oregon, Verona and Stoughton, Wisconsin, along with several accompanying web sites.

The Weekly Division also publishes free distribution Shopping News publications, which cover 100% of the homes in the counties near Platteville, Prairie du Chien and Richland Center, Wisconsin and Dyersville, Iowa. The Great Dane is another Shopping News publication near Madison, Wisconsin, covering part of Dane County. Total circulation for the Weekly Division is 135,500.

Prior to this position, Steve was the General Manager of the Telegraph Herald since April of 2007. Fisher directed day-to-day business of all areas of the newspaper operation excluding editorial. He joined the Telegraph Herald in June of 2001 as Retail Advertising Manager and became the Advertising Director in September of 2002. Steve was named Sales and Marketing Director of the Telegraph Herald in September of 2004.  Prior to the Telegraph Herald, he was the advertising manager at the Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig. 

Prior to Quincy, Steve held several positions with Liberty Group Publishing and American Publishing Company. From February 1998 to October 1999 Steve was the Publisher of the Marion (Ill.) Daily Republican, and the Herrin, (Ill.) Spokesman. From January 1995 to January 1998 Steve was the Publisher of the Du Quoin (Ill.) Evening Call.  Steve served as president of Eastern Iowa DMA, Inc., a national advertising representative firm owned by the Telegraph Herald, Cedar Rapids Gazette and Waterloo Courier.

Steve served as an officer in Metro Iowa Plus. He is a member of the Iowa Newspaper Associations promotional task force, and was a board member of the Midwest Newspaper Advertising Executives Association. He served as discussion leader and conducted training for the Inland Press Association, Wisconsin Newspaper Association, Iowa Newspaper Association and the American Press Institute. Steve served as a member of the Board of Directors Dubuque Area Chamber Commerce, where he was Workforce Development Division Chair. Steve is on the board of directors for the Grand Opera House.

A 1990 graduate of Truman State University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication.  Steve and his wife, Lori, have three boys.
